free hot lunch scheme

Since May 2026, every child in Scoil Mochua is now entitled to a free hot lunch every day. This is an aspect of school life that most children thoroughly enjoy. Lunches are provided free of charge to all pupils through The Lunch Bag.

About The Lunch Bag
The Lunch Bag is one of Ireland's leading school lunch providers, delivering nutritious hot and cold meals to primary schools nationwide as part of the Government's Hot School Meals Programme. The company works closely with schools and families to provide a varied menu, catering for a range of dietary requirements and preferences.
Parents order lunches directly through The Lunch Bag app, allowing families to select meals in advance and manage orders easily throughout the school year.

Setting Up Your Child's Lunch Account
Before your child begins receiving school lunches, you will receive an individualised letter containing a unique code for your child. This code is required to set up your account on The Lunch Bag app.
Please follow the instructions provided and register your child as soon as possible. Once registered, you can view the menu options and place your child's lunch orders.
All queries regarding menus, dietary requirements, app access, account setup, or lunch orders should be directed to The Lunch Bag.

What Parents Need to Provide
While the hot lunch is supplied by The Lunch Bag, parents will still need to provide:
  • A healthy snack for little break.
  • A drink for your child each day.
If your child likes particular condiments (such as ketchup, mayonnaise, or other sauces), you may send these in from home. Children may also bring their own cutlery if preferred. However, wooden cutlery and napkins are provided with the lunches each day. There is also a basket of apples and oranges provided to each classroom, each day that the children can snack on.

Important Information
  • Lunches must be ordered through The Lunch Bag app 48 hours in advance.
  • If your child is absent from school, please remember to cancel their lunch order via the app to help minimise food waste.
  • A reusable, plastic lunch box will be provided by The Lunch Bag. Any uneaten food and packaging will be returned home in this lunch box so that parents can monitor what their child is eating.
  • Please ensure that the empty lunch box is returned to school each day.
  • Please note that any leftover food sent home should not be reheated and consumed later. Leftovers are returned solely for monitoring purposes.

Supporting Healthy Eating Habits
The Hot School Lunch Scheme provides an excellent opportunity for children to experience a variety of nutritious foods and develop positive eating habits. We encourage parents to discuss menu choices with their children and to use the information returned in the lunch box to help identify foods their child particularly enjoys.
We look forward to working with families and The Lunch Bag to make lunchtime a positive and enjoyable experience for all children.
