Non-Uniform day - fundraiser for asiam
We had non-uniform day on Friday 26th April to raise funds for AsIam, as recommended by our wonderful Student Council. Children dressed in different colours to celebrate neurodiversity and the strengths and talents of people who think and learn in different ways. AsIAm is an Autism charity that provides advice, resources and guidance and endeavours to make Irish society more inclusive. Here is some pictures from our special day:
Neurodiversity awareness
One of our targets for Neurodiversity week was to develop awareness of neurodiversity throughout the school and celebrate the strengths and talents of neurodivergent people. The AsIAm committee developed lesson plans for each class group and we are delighted to present some of the artwork:
Lunchtime quiet club
We have a weekly quiet lunchtime club for 5th and 6th class pupils. This is an alternative option to the busy yard environment where children can read, colour or engage in a quiet activity of their choice. During neurodiversity week we extended the club to 1st and 2nd class. We were delighted with the positive response from the children and look forward to more relaxing quiet lunchtime clubs!
NeUrodiversity RESOURCES
We have collated some resources to raise awareness and understanding about autism throughout the school community. Here are some videos about autism recommended by our pupils:
Neurodiversity week
This week in Scoil Mochua we are celebrating neurodiversity. We are focused on developing awareness of neurodiversity and celebrating the strengths and talents of neurodivergent people.
Additionally we will be having a non-uniform day on Friday 26th April to raise funds for AsIam, as recommended by our Student Council. We are asking for a donation of €2 per family. AsIAm is an Autism charity that provides advice, resources and guidance and endeavours to make Irish society more inclusive. Each class has been assigned a colour:
Junior Infants = yellow
Senior Infants = blue
First class = green
Second class = red
Third class = yellow
Fourth class = blue
Fifth class = green
Sixth class = red
We hope the school will be a sea of colour on Friday to raise awareness for Neurodiversity!

OUR Current focus
Our current targets include the following:
- Establish a quiet lunchtime club: This weekly initiative has started for 5th and 6th class. We had an overwhelming response to the club and are hoping to extend this to more year groups.
- Neurodiversity Awareness Week: We will be running a whole school campaign to promote neurodiversity awareness at the end of April (to coincide with Autism Awareness month).
Targets achieved to date
We have reflected on specific areas of our teaching and learning and created targets. So far we have achieved a number of targets including :
- Development of communication passports for all class levels.
- Creating a bank of visual supports.
- Regular review of the school calendar. This allows us to put in place supports for pupils with AEN (additional educational needs) and facilitate pupil choice.
- Whole staff autism training.
- Investment in reading material which develops awareness of neurodiversity.
